2002 buick rendezvous review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A versatile five- to seven-passenger crossover vehicle. introductionbuick's all-new rendezvous crosses over all the lines that used to separate sedans, minivans, and sport-utility vehicles. The word 'crossover' is now becoming a word, as manufacturers are no longer putting quotation marks around it. It has fine manners on the highway, a benefit of its unibody construction normally associated with sedans. The three-row interior compares favorably with costlier vehicles. there is much to like here in terms of engineering, flexibility, and appearance. lineupbuick rendezvous comes in two models: cx 24,924) and cxl 27,452). cx comes with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Notable is the independent suspension, both front and rear, and anti-lock disc brakes all around. Both models come with 16-inch wheels, the clx with fancier ones. dual-stage airbags with side airbags (seat-mounted) for front-seat occupants are standard. Also standard on all models: roof rack, remote keyless entry, theft-deterrent system, am/fm/cd (the clx adds a cassette player), and power outlets in all three rows. cxl adds, among other features, dual automatic climate control, odor and pollen filter, ultrasonic rear parking aid, leather or upgraded cloth seating, and foot rests for second-row passengers. A tire inflation-pressure monitor will also be available. a number of options are available including a six-cd changer, onstar and a head-up display, which projects salient information on the windshield (low enough to be unobtrusive but clearly visible). The driver can read with a minimum of eye deflection the car's speed and radio or cd information. . walkaroundit is difficult to judge the size of the rendezvous without the context of another vehicle near it. That's usually a sign that the design team (headed, by the way, by a woman, liz wetzel) got the scale right. Although buick says the track of the rendezvous (64 inches between left and right tires) is wider than any suv, the body is still quite tall. But the eye is told otherwise by strong horizontal elements that say 'stability.' the traditional buick grille on the rendezvous emphasizes a familial resemblance to the park avenue but it somehow looks less formal and more cheery here. Additional hiding places and lockable bins are strategically placed here and there. the flexibility of the seating configurations is an exercise in automotive origami. The seats fold and tuck and fit into an amazing number of arrangements. For maximum capacity, however, the center row can be removed. the load-height is low, reducing back strain when loading or unloading heavy objects. Well, the rendezvous has a rear opening wide enough to take on board such building material flat. Well, the buick engineers found a way to do it. Too bad being unobtrusive is a mark of success because this needs to stand up and take applause. even with a 7-inch ground clearance and all-wheel drive, getting in and out of the rendezvous is more sedan-like than suv-like; small children, arthritic knees and tight-skirts can be grateful for that. All seats are easy to access and quite comfortable. access to the third row is far simpler than in most vehicles with three rows of seats. Once back there, the third row is pleasantly suitable for two full-size adults. That's best appreciated when driving with a full load of people and their stuff on a nasty, sleety, darkening afternoon with a slippery glaze on the street. but all is not sheer delight inside the rendezvous. The plastic used for the instrument panel looks dowdy compared with the rest of the interior. driving impressionon the road the rendezvous has a reassuring manner. Its long wheel base (6 inches longer that of the grand cherokee) smoothes surface irregularities like a sedan or a minivan. In handling the more sinuous highways, again it favors the minivan/sedan end of the scale. Driven in the truly twisty bits the rendezvous comported itself surprisingly well. Gm's all-wheel-drive system, called versatrak, requires no input from the driver. Versatrak drives just the front wheels until sensors agree that some traction assistance from the rear is advisable. Now this is where the versatrak is really clever: power is meted out separately and individually to the rear wheels, not just to the rear axle. The result is better traction and increased stability, making the rendezvous more capable in the snow and easier to drive in the slush. overall, the road demeanor of the rendezvous is pleasing. It stopped well, accelerated with reasonable aplomb (can't everything use more power?) and was quiet for an suv, though a little road-noisy by luxury sedan standards. summarythe rendezvous deserves a look on the basis of economy alone. In the first place it uses regular unleaded gas, not premium. Its thirstiness is temperate for its size: 22 miles per gallon on the highway for the versatrak, 24 mpg for the front-wheel-drive models. but where the rendezvous really shines is in the window sticker department: fully outfitted it is priced some $6500-$8000 below such all-wheel-drive vehicles as the lexus 300 rx and the acura mdx (and the lexus does not have three rows of seats). but the vehicle's flexibility, ease and variety of use are also strong points in its favor. Comfort and value in a big package. introductionhuge rear-drive sedans used to dominate america's highways. Conservatively styled, their objective is to provide comfort, convenience and value in a big package built for highway cruising. but for 1995, an interior overhaul of the crown victoria and grand marquis gives ford an edge on its gm competition. The thoughtful, handsome new interior is the best in its class. walkarounda walk around the crown victoria has always been a long trip. It received a rounded look in 1992, with the kind of curves that can visually minimize a 212-in. Vehicle but can't change the fact that this is still one big car. Exterior changes for 1995 fall mostly into the category of further refinement: smoother front and rear bumpers, new taillamps, and body-colored side mirrors and body moldings to clean up the look. a major functional change is a new aluminum trunk lid with a lip that extends down to the bumper. The shift to aluminum eliminated 19 pounds (if only it were that easy for all of us). The new lip widens access to the trunk and lowers the liftover height, theoretically easing the task of getting heavy objects into or out of the trunk. we say theoretically because, unfortunately, the trunk is as deep as the grand canyon. Lifting a heavy bag out of the bottom would be a considerable exercise for some. The trunk's volume is in its height; front-to-back depth is only average. The crown victoria's fuel economy is rated at 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, typical for this class, but we observed closer to 14 mpg around town. interiorthe point of a car like this is comfort, and the interior is critical to this. The new dashboard has a minimum number of pieces, reducing clutter. And the pieces are all well matched in color despite the differences in material - no easy task. This monochromatic look pleases the eye and makes the interior seem airy and spacious. a well-thought-out rearrangement has placed important controls in more logical locations. Ford has suffered for years with radios cluttered with tiny buttons. The new p100 faceplate is larger and simpler, with appealingly rounded edges. The knobs for the optional 6-way power seats (with two memory settings) for driver and front passenger are now high on the door panel rather than low and out of the way on the side of the seat. Release buttons for the fuel-filler door and the trunk are also on the door panel. But they are back-friendly and the increased fore-and-aft track travel - now 10 in. - makes entering and exiting easy. indeed, the entire interior is aimed at comfort. There is excellent visibility all around, thanks in part to a rear quarter window, which opens up the view for backing up. the sense of security felt in a car like this is one of its most important features. Thanks to its size, and the fact that most full-size sedan drivers aren't out to establish their credentials as racers, the crown victoria's injury frequency rates are among the lowest of any car on the road. grand isolation from noise and vibration is the goal, and the crown victoria achieves it well. The v8/rear-drive package is inherently one of the quietest available, and a few changes in the 4-speed transmission and gear ratios for '95 make the powertrain even quieter. the ride is traditional, which is to say soft. However, the optional anti-lock brakes (abs) inspired confidence in all situations, wet or dry. on the highway - this car's natural home - the soft suspension is much more acceptable. Fully loaded, the crown victoria lx is only a little more expensive than a fully loaded taurus lx. yet the crown victoria de-livers far more space, comfort and the smooth, effortless power that goes with a v8 engine. And a better handling package, like that in the impala ss, might broaden the crown victoria's appeal. still, this is a thoughtful, competent sedan that can soak up a lot of highway miles. The deville is in the details. introductioncadillac deville turns heads, a handsome combination of european and american, of contemporary and traditional. this duality reaches clear to the core of the deville concept. At a normal driving pace, this is a big, comfortable, luxurious sedan. Push it hard and the deville feels like a big sports sedan, particularly the dts model. Each has its own character and features. of the three, the standard deville fells like the traditional cadillac deville, balancing luxury and value. Dhs and dts depart from cadillac's old ways. They share many features, but as their names imply, one stresses luxury while the other highlights a sportier driving experience. the base-level car and dhs come with a full bench front seat for six-passenger capacity, while the dts has bucket front seats. Yet both offer a supple fit and feel. walkaroundcadillac completely redesigned the deville for 2000. The styling distinguishes it from other cars, including other cadillacs. People kept asking me, 'what kind of car is that?' this was the first cadillac to be solely designed using autostudio, a computer-aided design tool. Although it looks larger and richer than before, the current deville actually measures three inches shorter and two inches narrower than the '99 model. Large front lighting clusters giving the deville a bold appearance. A grinning eggcrate grille extends between the headlights. For 2002, all devilles wear the updated cadillac wreath and crest emblems. in profile the deville still looks all cadillac. Large doors, massive body panels and expansive glass are broken only by a highlight trim piece along the lower section. Large, full-arch wheel wells are filled by 16-inch alloy rims and all-season tires on deville and dhs or 17-inch wheels and performance tires on dts. from the rear, the deville carries the traditional cadillac ambiance, but it looks much more contemporary. This look is highlighted at night when the led taillights create a thin vertical line. The fins of yesteryear may be gone, but those twin vertical slashes still shout cadillac loud and clear. Led lights also serve a practical propose: they are easier to see and light up much faster than normal incandescent lighting, giving drivers of following cars an extra fraction of a second warning. Which is all it takes, in some cases, to prevent a collision. The rear turn signals look quite distinctive and stand out brightly when blinking. interiorfrom inside the deville, as from outside, it's hard to believe that this car is actually a little smaller than the familiar cadillacs of 1994-99. Once behind the wheel the deville feels as roomy as ever, if not more so. Dhs and dts add power lumbar massage. Independent climate controls for rear passengers offer both fan and temperature adjustments. the high-beam indicator is located next to the digital trip odometer and nearly the same blue color. This makes it difficult to see, so it's easy to leave the high beams on by mistake, blinding other drivers. the optional ultrasonic rear parking assist system is really slick and very well executed. Besides the safety benefits, it's very useful when parking the car or maneuvering in tight locations. It's becoming a must-have feature for those of us who sometimes find parallel parking a challenge. cadillac has added several new technological features for 2002. An advanced vehicle navigation system is available, as is xm radio (satellite digital) technology. The car also gets dual-stage air bag inflators, an additional power outlet on the front passenger seat's umbrella tray, express-up front windows, extended oil change intervals and even a new exterior color - blue onyx. the new navigation system incorporates voice recognition technology so the driver can keep hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. A 6. 5-inch touch-screen is mounted in the dashboard. The screen tilts down to load the navigation dvd, entertainment dvd or an audio cd while the vehicle is in park. However, the screen will show the movie on an entertainment dvd only while the transmission is in park. one navigation dvd covers the entire united states and canada. For those who want to play music cds while the navigation system is engaged, a glove box-mounted six-cd changer is available. last year, onstar, which is standard on all devilles, added personal calling, which allows drivers to initiate and receive hands-free, voice-activated phone calls without an additional cellular contract, as well as personal advisor, which delivers internet-based news headlines, sports scores, stock quotes, and weather reports. driving impressionthe deville dts model's suspension filters out vibration and bumps, but it feels much firmer than cadillacs of yore. The deville doesn't float around like those older machines, which could sometimes induce nausea in rear-seat passengers. Though not as firm as a bmw 5 series, the deville's suspension settings provide a well-controlled ride. Bumps are felt, but muffled to comfortable levels. Go around a fast, sweeping turn and potholes and bumps won't upset the suspension, a benefit of the deville's highly rigid chassis. This translates into more comfort on the highway without having to sacrifice handling. Yet, the new deville does not feel like the proverbial boat once associated with big american cars. It's smooth and stable at high speeds. Just remember to steer. An electronic brake distribution system helps reduce stopping distances by distributing the braking force front to rear for optimum performance. In normal, everyday, around-town applications, the brake pedal feels smooth and progressive, making it easy to slow the car down smoothly. the dts has lots of power and growls under hard acceleration. The deville comes with the superb northstar v8 engine, which develops 300 horsepower for the dhs and dts (275 horsepower in the standard deville). The northstar engine was significantly re-engineered for the 2000 model year. These refinements make the deville more responsive, more fuel efficient and quieter, all without sacrificing performance. we were very impressed with the calibration of the transmission and the way it communicates with the engine. Slam the throttle to the floor, however, and the deville smartly shifts to second, the northstar engine growls to life and the car rockets ahead. It's a great drivetrain. electronics help the driver control the deville in emergency maneuvers. Cadillac's stabilitrak 2. 0 skid-control system makes it virtually impossible to get the deville to go out of control. CD Changer✔ Navigation System
